The Pulitzer committee recognized the work of a team of journalists for their “groundbreaking and ambitious reporting that pierced the thick wall of secrecy surrounding the Supreme Court.” They were commended for their detailed and nimble coverage of catastrophic flooding and mudslides that displaced thousands of residents and destroyed numerous homes and businesses. The winning journalist exposed the reach of migrant child labor across the United States and the failures of corporations and the government in addressing it. Another recognized journalist presented a searing indictment of the legal system’s reliance on the felony murder charge and its disparate consequences.
