China economy: Key meeting offers few clues on how to tackle worsening downturn
China’s Communist Party Set Ambitious Policy Goals at Plenum Meeting #
China’s ruling Communist Party has set ambitious long-term policy goals at its most important political meeting on reform. In a behind-closed doors meeting known as the third plenum, more than 360 members of the party’s Central Committee held talks to discuss how to deepen reforms in various areas and advance ‘Chinese-style modernization.’ The meeting outlined broad goals such as boosting technology self-sufficiency, improving social welfare, and deepening reforms of fiscal, taxation, and financial systems. However, it provided little detail on how to address the pressing issues facing China’s economy, leaving global investors disappointed. The meeting also confirmed personnel changes and highlighted a history of paying lip service to market dynamism.
