DETROIT, AP -- Starting next year, Ford Motor Co. will provide access to 12,000 Tesla Superchargers in the U.S.
Ford CEO Jim Farley announced the agreement with Tesla CEO Elon Musk during an audio chat on 'Twitter Spaces.'
Farley stated, 'We believe this is a major move for our industry as well as for all of the electric customers.'
Musk stated that he did not want Tesla's network as a "walled garden" and that he wanted to use it for sustainable transportation.
Musk stated that he would do all he could to help Ford, and to have Ford on an equal basis with Tesla Superchargers.
Farley did not give any specifics, but said that Ford owners will have to pay a fee, possibly a monthly subscription. Ford and Tesla have not disclosed any details of a financial agreement.
Ford's electric vehicles, as they are now, will require an adapter in order to connect with Tesla stations. Tesla stations have their own connector. Ford's second-generation EVs will use the Tesla North American Charging Standard connector starting in 2025.
Farley stated that Tesla's Superchargers are located in great places.
We love the location. He said, 'We love the reliability. Ford's Blue Oval network, which boasts about 10,000 fast charging stations, will also include these new stations.
Musk stated that Ford EV users will be able access Tesla chargers with Ford's application.
